This is the first level of post-graduate additional qualification. It shows that the holder is a competent clinician who has proved his/her experience & expertise by examination. They will have needed to show at least two years' experience where the majority of their work has involved small animal medicine. Look for the letters Cert. (Small Animal Medicine) after your vet's name. There are currently 145 in the UK.
This second level of qualification shows that the holder has achieved a high standard of academic and professional expertise in small animal or feline medicine. The holder will have needed to show at least 4 years' experience in small animal or feline medicine, with at least 200 days spent in an approved training centre. They also need to submit a dissertation or published scientific paper, and sit comprehensive exams. The letters DSAM or DSAM (Fel) after your vet's name denote this level of qualification. There are currently only 3 veterinary surgeons with feline diplomas in the UK.
Diploma holders may apply to the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons to be included on a list of RCVS Specialists In Feline Medicine or Small Animal Medicine. In order to be considered, they must show that they are currently active in the field, that they maintain their skills through Continuing Professional Development (CPD) and that they contribute to the continued education of other veterinary surgeons. They must re-apply every five years
The Diploma in Advanced Veterinary Nursing is an advanced professional qualification awarded by the RCVS to veterinary nurses who choose to do further study in either Surgery or Medicine. The course takes a lot of dedication as it involves studying cases seen in practice, as well as exams, all whilst working in practice.
